Have You Become Sick While on Vacation?

Dear CUPE members.

For the most part many of us go away on vacation and have a lovely time. Unfortunately there may be an occasion in which a member may take vacation days and become sick or injured. If that is the case, it is important that you know you may claim those vacation days as sick days.

That said there is a process that must be followed.

Check out that process here.

#CUPE 403\'s Long-Term Disability Plan Update

The Long-Term Disability (LTD) benefit is insurance that renews annually and was calculated based on the risk characteristics of the current insured employees.  Risk factors such as age, gender, occupation, industry, and the amount of coverage on each insured are applied against the LTD rate tables to determine the composite renewal rate.  The experience of the pool may also be a factor in establishing a renewal rate for this plan.

The calculated overall increase presented by *SSQ Financial Group is 25.75%.  This relates to the LTD cost increasing from $2.680 to $3.370 per hundred for the coming year.  Even though CUPE 403's LTD Plan has seen high usage over the past few years, the rate is well within line with other similar CUPE groups.  The overall increase was primarily due to a **Loss Ratio of over 201%.  The previous year the Loss Ratio was 209%.

Editor's note: The above explanation was prepared by the Local's insurance broker.

* SSQ Financial Group: Is the carrier for the Local's LTD plan.

** Loss ratio: The payout was higher than what is collected in premiums.

#CUPE 403...Helping Make the Community a Better Place #union #canlab

Dear CUPE 403 members.

Something we have not addressed very often (or very publicly), is CUPE 403's willingness to provide financial support for important events or endevours within our community.

Not only is such financial support deeply appreciated by the groups and/or individuals who receive it, it is an investment in the community that helps enrich it and those around us.

We thought it time to provide an overview of what (or who) some of your union dues have gone towards assisting over the past 1 ½ years.

It is a broad and varied list of community activities and events in which all members may take credit. They are as follows:

  • BC Senior Games Sponsor
  • BC Special Olympics Sponsor
  • Royal Canadian Legion - annual sponsor for Military Service Recognition book
  • Aldergrove Neighborhood Service - annual sponsor for Summer Activity Calendar
  • TOL Lifeguard Competition - sponsor for annual competition
  • Langley Fine Arts - sponsor for Girls Conference
  • Triple A Langley Senior Housing Workshop - event sponsor
  • Families for Justice donation
  • BC Cancer Society Fundraiser donation
  • Alzheimer’s Society fundraiser donation
  • Langley Food Bank donation
  • Langley Christmas Bureau donation
  • Dry Grad Donations to numerous Langley Secondary Schools

Thank you to the membership in helping make our community a better place to live, work, and play.
